DARI DIARY

A story from our family

In the 1980s, Zobeir and his family moved from Afghanistan to Germany. The children spent much of their childhood with their grandmother, Bibi Gul. At her home they heard stories about Afghanistan and their parents, discovered familiar dishes and turned ordinary afternoons into imaginative adventures.

Zobeir, Mariam, Bibi Gul, Meschgan and Ali are real people: my older cousins and our grandmother. I’m turning their experiences and the stories passed down through our family into children’s books.

The people and places in the illustrations are drawn from my memories too – Grandma’s living room, the hallway, the food and the faces of our family. For me, this book is a journey back in time and a project close to my heart.

Zobeir, Meschgan, Mariam and Ali run through a mysterious cave with a lantern.
